Discord has offered an early look at its rebuilt Android app, with code shared across the phone and desktop versions. Co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy described the mobile work in a November 6 post.
The rebuild uses Rust, a programming language, for the shared code. On phones, that code controls the operating system’s own interface components, Vishnevskiy said.
The update follows his November 4 desktop post. He said Discord began using Rust in 2018. Parts of its infrastructure, voice technology and current app already use it, he said. His goal was to extend Rust through the app.
In the mobile preview, Vishnevskiy said the app felt especially responsive on his own phone. That is his impression of the build, rather than a measured result for other devices.
The November 6 post gives no public release date or device requirements for the rebuild. It also contains no link to download the new version.
