EA says players who own its classic Wing Commander games on GOG or the EA app will get the matching Anniversary Editions for free. The upgrades stay on the store where the player already owns each game.
The offer forms part of EA’s November 5 launch, which brings 25 older PC games to Steam for the first time. Seven are restored editions. The other 18 are ports, including Theme Hospital, Crusader and Ultima games.
The restored group pairs Road Rash with six Wing Commander releases. Those cover Wing Commander I–IV, Prophecy and Privateer 2: The Darkening. GOG’s Prophecy listing says the new edition will be added to the libraries of players who own the older version.
EA producer Jim Vessella credits community patches with making the new Wing Commander editions possible. Matt Wells’s work on Wing Commander III and IV added support for higher-quality video, along with control and gameplay changes.
Vessella says the 30th Anniversary games also offer original 1990s videos and recovered master footage. Players can choose those instead of the optional AI-upscaled versions.
Road Rash is getting its first digital release of the 1996 PC game. EA lists a relicensed soundtrack, controller support and gameplay up to 60 frames per second. The launch discounts on Steam and GOG run from November 5 to 19.
